Design Analysis

Hello!!, today I'm going to be studying 2 magazines by mainly focusing on design analysis.

Here are the covers of the magazines

Studying the covers

1. I like the bright and vibrant colors and the collage of the football players on the cover

2. The title “The big book of NFL trivia” catches my eye, as it stands out and it engages me to read it.

3. The placement of text and objects is very well balanced, with the masthead at the top, cover lines above and below the title.

4. I noticed that the photography on the cover is dynamic and attention grabbing, with a mix of action shots and celebratory moments.

5. The fonts vary in size, shape, color, and placement, with the title “101 Greatest Moments in Sports” Which stands out in large yellow text.

6. Not all conventions are on every magazine cover, but the covers include most of the common conventions, such as masthead, title, cover lines, and barcode.

7. I would maybe use similar conventions on my own magazine cover, such as a bold title and dynamic photography, to grab the reader’s attention or maybe I would lean into a more modern look.

Studying the table of contents

1. I like how the TOC is organized and easy to follow, with clear headings and concise descriptions.

2. The two photographs of football players in action catch my eye, as they add a visual element to the TOC.

3. The placement of objects, section headers, and page numbers is well-organized, with clear hierarchy and white space to avoid clutter.

4. The photography is action-oriented and relevant to the topic of football, adding a dynamic element to the TOC.

5. The fonts are clear and readable, with varying sizes and colors used to create visual hierarchy and draw attention to important elements.

6. Not all conventions are present in every magazine TOC, but this one includes most of the common conventions.

7. I would use the conventions of clear headings, concise descriptions, relevant photography, and well-organized placement of objects in my magazine TOC.

Studying the two-page spread

  1. I like the spreads because they effectively use typography, color scheme, and visual/verbal connections to create a visually appealing and engaging design.

  1. The contrast between the black-and-white and color photos catches my eye, as well as the bold headlines and fonts used throughout the spreads.

  1. The placement of objects, headlines, and pictures is strategic, with a clear hierarchy of information and visual flow.

  1. The photography is high-quality, with a mix of action shots and posed photos that add depth and interest to the spreads.

  1. The fonts vary in size, shape, color, and placement, creating a dynamic and engaging visual experience.

  1. Not all conventions are present on every two-page spread, but the ones used are effective in creating a cohesive and visually appealing design.

  1. I would use conventions such as typography, color scheme, and visual/verbal connections to create an engaging and informative two-page spread for my magazine.

Target Audience & Representation

1. The target audience for my magazine would be competitive swimmers, coaches, and people who are interested in improving their technique, speed, strength, and resilience in freestyle and butterfly strokes.

2.This magazine will show diverse swimmers, coaches, and experts from various backgrounds, ages, abilities, and different problems to show inclusivity. I also made sure to include different perspectives and discuss topics that are often overlooked in my topic.
