Magazine Publisher Research
To further help with my magazine, I researched information about a magazine publisher, and in this case I chose Hearst Magazines.
Hearst Magazines
1.
The most recent being 2022, They had made a profit of $11.9 billion dollars
Hearst didn’t give specific percentages, but its estimated around 60-70% for advertising and subscriptions and single copy purchases are around 20-30% of revenue.
Heart Magazines has more digital subscriptions, but it does have a lot of physical subscriptions.
They spent most of their money on content creation and distribution. While it doesn’t say the costs specifically the most expensive area is content creation, and then second would be printing costs.
The trends over the last five years have been revenue growth from both digital and print advertising. They also had a shift of digital strategies, so their digital subscriptions have increased.
Top three magazines
1.Good housekeeping (Genre: Home & Family)
4 million print subscribers over 10 million digital subscribers
2. Cosmopolitan (Genre: Women’s Fashion & Beauty)
b. 3 million print subscribers and 10 million digital subscribers
3. Esquire (Genre: Men’s Fashion & Lifestyle)
c. 700,000 print subscribers
For Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, and Esquire, digital subscriptions have been increasing a lot. Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan have large digital following (10 million subs for each) Esquire seems to be neutral on digital and physical.
Audience:
1. Good Housekeeping: Women aged 30-60 focusing on family, home, cooking, health
2. Cosmopolitan: Women ages 18-34, beauty, pop culture, sexual relationships
3. Esquire: Men ages 25-45 with a focus on fashion, culture, and lifestyle.
g. Amazon, Comcast, and the Ritz-Carlton.
1. It doesn’t tell how much they were paid.
2. Amazon: electronics, books, HomeGoods, clothing, beauty products, and etc.
Comcast: cable television services, high speed internet services, phone services, streaming services.
Ritz-Carlton: Hotel room and suites, fine dining experiences, spa and wellness spaces, and luxury travel packages.
3. Amazon e-commerce and tech
Many different audiences, many different consumers and businesses
Online shoppers, tech enthusiast, Prime members!!
Comcast (Telecommunications and Media)
Households, entertainment consumers, businesses needing internet/ cable.
Families, sports fans, professionals and tech users
Ritz-Carlton (Luxury suites)
Travelers, luxury seekers
High-income people, corporate travelers.
4. The connection between the three biggest advertisers Amazon, Comcast, and Ritz-Carlton-and the top magazines for a publisher is their target audiences and brand positioning. Amazon, catering to a broad consumer base, aligns with general and tech-focused magazines like Time or Wired to reach online shoppers and tech enthusiasts. Comcast, as a telecommunications and media giant, fits well with entertainment and business publications like Entertainment Weekly or Forbes, appealing to households and professionals seeking connectivity and content. Meanwhile, Ritz-Carlton, a luxury brand, advertises in high-end lifestyle and travel magazines like Condé Nast Traveler or The Robb Report, travelers and luxury seekers. This strategy ensures that each advertiser reaches the audience most likely to engage with their products and services.
So, for the next part I identified 5 magazines with the same genre as my magazine.
a. So, Foot, The Big Book of NFL Trivia, Golf Magazine, Golf Monthly, 101 Greatest Moments in Sports.
b. -Yes, the test descriptions are often always describing equipment, the pages also have a similar layout with a photo which is accompanied by test and other graphic and illustrations.
- The content, the images feature different topics, including sports like tennis and golf, and a man sitting on a car. Language: One image is in French while the rest are in English, the format is different, and the visual style is different.
- The magazines have many images and headlines about sports, travel, and culture. The sport pages have different stories and experiences with the sport. While, there are instances where there are cultural pages of products or an advertisement (cars and golfing products).
-Layout design: The layouts are generally clean and organized, with clear headings and sections.
Copy: The text is concise and informative, with a mix of short paragraphs and captions.
Fonts: The fonts used are varied, but mostly sans-serif and easy to read.
Colors: The color palettes are muted, with splashes of bright colors to draw attention to key elements.
Question to think about: What makes these pages visually appealing or unappealing?
• Visually appealing
• Use of high-quality images and graphics
• Clear and organized layouts
• Effective use of white space
• Bold and attention-grabbing headlines
Unappealing:
• Some pages have a lot of text and not enough images, making them feel dense and heavy
• A few pages have fonts that are too small or hard to read
• Some color choices are not as effective, making the pages feel less engaging
